phi psi

Phi Psi New York Beta is a community of men who strive to reach the highest goals. We pride ourselves in setting the bar high in academics, philanthropy, athletics, community service, and brotherhood, always taking the initiative and leading where others follow. Among fraternity organizations in the United States, Phi Kappa Psi retains the largest Endowment Fund of all, meaning that we have more scholarships available to our brothers than any other fraternity. Phi Psi-exclusive programs such the Alpha Leadership Academy—located in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico—and the Woodrow Wilson Leadership Academy have consistently helped develop young men into successful leaders through the years. Upon graduation, Phi Psi brothers enter the world with the necessary skills to prosper in life. Our New York Beta chapter is dedicated to helping brothers find jobs, developing successful students, and most importantly, providing the most memorable and fun times of collegiate life.

Being a member of Phi Kappa Psi doesn’t end with college, however. It is a lifelong association that carries lifelong benefits. The sheer nature of belonging to our fraternity increases networking opportunities tenfold, as the Phi Psi name connects brothers to a larger community that extends far beyond the borders of Syracuse University. Regular alumni meetings allow members from around the country and around the world to link up and use their common bonds to help one another. Finding a post-college job opportunity and getting advice to further a career is much easier and more effective with the support of a nationwide community.

Worried about your academics? Worried that your parents won’t think this is a good idea? Stress the scholastic benefits of joining Phi Psi. With regular study groups and study hours established at the beginning of every semester, we ensure that our brothers remain motivated and successful students. Furthermore, our Alumni House Dad is an Academic Advisor for Syracuse University, specializing in working with job resumes and applications. Talk about your personal consultant...

Throughout history, Brothers of Phi Kappa Psi have made their marks in the world. Leaders such as Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, join the political ranks of over 100 Phi Psi’s that have served as members of the U.S. Congress, including 17 U.S. Senators. Prominent men such as former President Woodrow Wilson and John F. Kennedy, Jr. allow us to look into our pasts to see the great futures that await a Phi Psi.

Joining the Greek System can enhance your college experience, but only joining Phi Kappa Psi will enhance the rest of your life.

Info and Rush Events

Our New York Beta chapter of Phi Kappa Psi is a member of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) at Syracuse University. We take on new members through the formal, campus-wide IFC Recruitment each fall and spring semester, more commonly known as fall and spring Rush. A 2.3 GPA is required to register for IFC Recruitment.

Get in touch with our Spring 2010 Membership Chair, Alex Haederle ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or check up on our website to find out about informal recruitment events that we host.
Having quickly grown to more than 70 brothers, our Phi Psi chapter is concerned with attracting and pledging high-quality new members as opposed to a large quantity.

We pride ourselves on selecting intelligent, involved, and honorable gentlemen for entry into our brotherhood.

New Member Education

Our New Member Education period lasts for six weeks and familiarizes new members with our chapter and Phi Kappa Psi history. New members can begin to develop as leaders within the fraternity right away. We also build in mandatory study hours each week, ensuring that new members do not become overwhelmed with chapter activities and lose track of their academics. Our chapter GPA of 3.15 is proudly one of the highest on the Syracuse University campus.

As part of the New Member Education period, active Phi Psi brothers work with new members to develop a house improvement project that can be accomplished within the six week timeframe. Each class of new members collaborates on this project throughout the New Member Education period. Once the project is complete, these new members feel a sense of pride in enhancing our fraternity. An example of a recent project is the restoration and re-painting of the basement, complete with wall illustrations of the Phi Kappa Psi Creed and fraternity flower (the Jacque Minot Rose). Brothers and new members work jointly on these projects for the purpose of physically improving the house, and in the process they get to know and accept one another as brothers.

New Members are also taught the essentials of social planning and risk management, so that each class of new members can plan a safe and fun party, start to finish. In the week preceding a party, new members choose a party theme, decorate the house to their liking, select the guest list, and assign tasks to the rest of the brotherhood for house security. The execution of this party is essential in developing leadership skills, and it often motivates new members to join the Social Committee after initiation.

Finally, our chapter is completely against hazing of all forms. The New Member Education period is designed to educate new members about our fraternity, and to create and strengthen bonds between brothers and new members.
